Full of interest and history

four stars

The city is so easy to get around on the public transport, makes it very easy to plan your day and explore. Berlin is truly the future capital of Europe and is very user friendly.

Best European City :)

five stars

The young lively atmosphere here is so unique for a city which has had such a turbulent and uncertain history. So many fascinating and exciting places to visit for people with so many interests. The buildings are so contrasting; the gothic old catherdrals, new modern universities and the more run down areas on the suburbs. VISIT BERLIN :)

A City of Elegance

five stars

If you travel to nowhere else on this planet PLEASE go to Berlin. It is a city with a heart beat like no other. There is literally something there for every cultural taste and there is a warmth of welcome that is second to none. The many people I met whilst on my second visit to the city were eager to share their time and knowledge with me. There are so many historic places touching so much European and World history it is difficult to know where to start. I would recommend the open top bus tour to familiarise yourself, The food, the hotels, the shopping, public transport is of the highest standard I have experienced in my travels. Their history is rich, accessible and honest, It is truly the capital city for the whole world.

Interesting, but not beautiful

three stars

Berlin is worth a visit. It certainly isn't boring, there's lots of touristy stuff to see, it's a good place for film, music, theatre and visual art and there's quite a lot going on if you're into nightlife - millions of trendy bars, cafes and nightclubs. Compared to other European capitals such as Paris or London, Berlin has, on the whole, a down to earth feel and the hotels are much cheaper but there is definitely a capital city snobbiness there too if you go to the trendier areas. Also, I found the service in most places decidedly second rate compared to London, and don't go there expecting Parisian beauty either. Apart from a few new buildings and the ones the bombs didn't hit, most of the architecture is plain awful - just concrete blocks, which, along with the bullet holes on the walls of the old buildings, become a bit depressing after a while. Also, the (by German standards) run-down underground system can be dangerous at night-time.

A "must visit" city

five stars

Berlin is a wonderful, vibrant and interesting city. Due to its recent past, its a fantastic mix of beautiful old baroque style buildings, and intriguing modern designs. There is loads to see and do, with an abundance of parks and woods to stroll through and escape the bustle of this busy city. Generally a very clean place, the only down side is the amount of graffiti, and amazingly for German organisation, dog mess on pavements here and there. But apart from that Berlin is almost a breath of fresh air in terms of "city break" holidays. We have been twice in a year and a half, and are due to go back again in the new year to see other bits we missed before. A must visit city. And yes, you can even go to the beach in Berlin. Strange, but true. You can even join in the sand castle building competitions!

We will definitely go back

four stars

A very clean friendly city that works. Wonderful architecture, museums, transport system and restaurants. Our hotel was excellent with first class service. We simply didn't have enough time to see all we wanted to, so we are looking forward to the next time.

Building site

three stars

Not the top european city to visit, you are never more than 50 M from building work ! eg the Brandenburg gate is ruined by the building of the new US embassy. Go to Munich instead !

Totally underrated city, go now!

five stars

Berlin, like all modern cities, is continually developing. It's a very modern city, with deep historical roots. This is evident more in the West with many modern buidings jostling for space with beautiful relics from the past - best shown by the 'broken tooth' cathedral at the end of the Ku'damm. The East is stark in contrast, but refreshingly open and spacious. The feeling of history you get walking through the Brandenburg gate is priceless, and the museums are spot on - my favourite was the Art Deco museum. The locals seem very friendly, open and relaxed - the total reverse of London. Restaurants are great - Oranienburger Strasse is the place to go for cheap interesting food from around the world. Bars are friendly and the clubs are something else. I went in Summer 2004 and had such a fantastic week I went back for new year, which was a mad experience (mind the fireworks though! Do these people not have health and safety laws?). The Park Inn hotel I stayed in over new year is well priced, very smart (now its been modernised), has a nice bar, friendly staff and is central and well connected to the rest of the city. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn are clean and reliable, and are the best way to get around with sensibly timed early morning first trains to carry you back to your hotel after a night out. It's also a comparitively safe city, with a low crime rate meaning you rarely feel wary walking down quiet streets at night. I'll be going back very soon as I've yet to go to the top of the Fernsehturm!
